Traumatic stress involves the most primitive and basic systems of human physiology—the nervous system’s impulse to fight, flee or freeze in the face of threat. Trauma occurs when the body’s self-protective responses are overwhelmed and fail to ensure the person’s safety. This results in the nervous system becoming “stuck” in experience of being in danger.
